Saint Joseph College Cavite City is a Roman Catholic school located at San Roque, Cavite City in the Philippines. It was established in 1945 and was run by the Augustinian Recollect Sisters. The first opening of classes was on July 2, 1945. The first school building was then known as St. Joseph Institute and in 1947 it was renamed St. Joseph College. Today, SJC, located in Cavite City offers education from Preschool to Graduate School. After 54 years of service, SJC is still in service and continues to stand proud as an educational institution which aims to mold the minds of the youth for quality Catholic education.

History

The old gate of St. Joseph CollegeIn order to appreciate fully the developments and contributions made by Saint Joseph College, a brief insight into the historical background of the founding sisters could bring to light a deeper understanding of the motives and aims that led to the establishment and maintenance of the educational institution. The Saint Joseph College has its roots in the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters. The congregation started in 1719 and a house was built for them known as the Beaterio de San Sebastian.

Thirty five years later, in 1754, by order of the Governor and Captain-General of the Philippines, the Recollects of the Third Order were examined to select the sisters who were well-prepared to teach. Among those selected to be the first teachers were Sor Nicholasa de San Jose, Sor Ignacia dela Santisima Trinidad and Sor Clara de Sta. Rita. The teaching mission was carried on in the Beaterio and the nature of the teaching done was more on the tutorial level. This kind of instruction went on until 1907 when formal education started in the Beaterio now known as Saint Rita College. The teaching apostolate continued but was interrupted by World War II.

In the early post liberation days of 1945, the late Msgr. Pedro Lerena was the parish priest of Cavite City. He found the opportunity to propose his plan to the Very Reverend Mother Rosario Rosales, the Superior General of the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters, of having a Catholic school in the city of Cavite. The Superior General of the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters sent the very first group of Sisters: Sister Ma Celina Magcawas, as the Superior-Principal, Sister Caridad Salazar and Sister Margarita Ponce, as her companion. The work started under the superiorship of Sister Ma. Celina Magcawas. The sisters rented an old two-storey house on a lot directly across the street at the back entrance of the San Roque Parish Church and near the sea in a quite residential section of the city. On July 2, 1945, classes were opened and this became the first school building and known as Saint Joseph Institute. Inauguration was made in the presence of Very Reverend Mother General Rosario Rosales and a group of Sisters.

In 1946, The following courses were given their full government recognition: complete elementary and secondary course, Junior Normal (E.T.C.) and Liberal Arts. In 1947, the school was re-named Saint Joseph College and the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) was opened and was given a full recognition in 1949. Then the rented house was bought and an additional lot was purchased. In 1950, the Quonset was demolished together with the old house and the construction of a new building of three-storey started. The construction was finished in the same year with the help of the generous benefactors: the U.S. Navy and Sangley Point, Mrs. Antolia Cosca, Mrs. Soledad Valeriano, Mrs. Basilia Mangilit, Mrs. Flora Sabadistro and Don Salvador Magcawas. After ten years (1945 – 1955) of untiring efforts, Sister Ma. Celina Magcawas was recalled to the Mother House in Manila.

In 1955, Mother Angeles Gabutina took over the Superiorship and the supervision of the school. Equal in energy and leadership, Mother Angeles Gabutina gave full concern to the young sturdy institution. New buildings were constructed which housed the high school department during the day and the collegiate department in the evening. The ground floor featured an all purpose hall. New equipment for the laboratory, books and reference materials for the library were purchased to maintain a good standard for the school. In 1964, Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (B.S.E.Ed.) was opened and was given full government recognition in 1967. Then 2,500 square meters of sea area was reclaimed and cemented. Here, the gymnasium was constructed and it also served as an auditorium during the festivities and on special occasions. In, 1968, a graduate course in Education (M.A.) was opened and was given a full recognition in 1970. This helped the professionals of the neighboring towns and in the city to further their educational training. After fifteen years (1955 – 1970) of effective leadership, Mother Angeles Gabutina was recalled to the Mother House in Manila for another assignment. A continued progress of Saint Joseph College in the years to came was assured. At the opening of classes for the school year 1970, Sister Agustina Salcedo was sent by the Superior General to take over the work as Superior-Principal and the Dean of the College Department. In 1972, Sister Agustina worked for an additional course, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) and had an initial enrolment of forty one students in Pre-Nursing. The enrolment has increased ever since. After five years labor, Sister Agustina Salcedo was recalled to the Mother House in Manila.

Present

The New mock Hotel at S.J.C. CaviteFrom its humble beginnings dating back to 1945 as St. Joseph’s Institute, and was renamed St. Joseph College in 1947, the school has blossomed into one of the most respectable educational institutions not only in Cavite City but also in the entire province of Cavite.

The Augustinian Recollect Sisters take turns in managing the school. The school’s expansion in buildings and program offerings is in response to the needs and aspirations of the people in the community. An additional baccalaureate program was added at a time when hotels and restaurants were beginning to operate in the suburbs as a result of expatriates moving into the province due to the opening and development of an export processing zone in the nearby town of Rosario, Cavite.

The school administrators have initiated several innovations; one of which is the construction of a mock hotel that will house the HRM students for their practicum.

A building for the grade school department is also in the list of priorities after the construction of the simulation hotel. Apart from that, the school has already managed to have the school chapel renovated and all the classrooms air-conditioned. Additional laboratory materials have also been purchased for the various laboratories of High School and College; while the Skills Laboratory of the Institute of Health Sciences has been upgraded to keep up with the demands of the nursing program. The Learning Resource Center or the library is continuously acquiring newly published books to help students in their assignments and requirements. Computers with internet access have also been provided to all laboratories and offices.

The newly Refurbish School chapel of St Joseph CollegeSt. Joseph College is currently offering Preparatory Education, Elementary, High School, B.S. Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery, Bachelor in Elementary Education, Bachelor in Secondary Education (Major in Science, Mathematics, English, Filipino, and Social Science), and B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management and Tourism. It also has a Master of Arts in Education and Master of Arts in Nursing program offerings.

The basic education, Elementary and High School, is PAASCU accredited; while the College of Education and HRM and the Institute of Health Sciences are preparing for accreditation this school year.

St. Joseph College is never left behind as far as board passers are concerned. In 2001, Ms. Glorieciel R. Delos Santos gave honor to the Institute of Health Sciences by emerging on top of the Nursing Board Examination, besting thousands of students from all over the country. For the School of Midwifery, it ranked 3rd over-all in September 2004 and 1st over-all in 2005 and 2006. The graduates of this school are all successful in their chosen endeavor.

Today, on its 62nd year of service and commitment not only to the community and the whole country, St. Joseph College continues to stand proud as an educational institution steadfast in providing quality Christian education.

St. Augustine Philosophy Of Education
Education is man’s journey of knowing God who is the Eternal Truth and of loving Him who is the Eternal Good. To achieve this goal, man journeys restlessly in faith according to the example and teachings of Jesus Christ and through reason which is his natural gift from the Creator.

In this concrete, Augustinian education aims to accompany young men and women who can integrate Faith and Reason in their personal lives in order to arrive at whatever is true and develop moral values to enable them to live in harmony with others.

Through the guidance and example of parents and teachers, the Augustinian pupils or students must become increasingly aware of their responsibilies to fellowmen and readily contribute to the building of just and human society where the Filipino people can journey together towards God.

Philosophy And Aims Of Education Of The A.R. School
Encouraged by the whole philosophy of Catholic Education according to Vatican II, he Augustinian Recollect schools aim at preparing the youth for Christ-like living through the fullness of Christian personality and at making them capable of giving themselves with the greater generosity to various forms of service for neighbor, so as to attain happiness and achievement which springs from true love. It endeavors to develop in the youth, ideals and skills requisite o the maturing of their Christian personality so that they can bring a warmer love to the Home and to the Larger Community- the Church and the world. The intellectual and moral formation of every student is based essentially on the teachings of Holy Mother, the Church.
